Current Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Defensive Scheme: 3-4 (slight lean 2-gap)
2009 Fantasy Positional Finish (My Scoring System): LB46
ADP (Junkyard Jake): LB24
My Current Ranking: LB48
2010 Outlook: I’ve seen Timmons typically ranked within the top 25 fantasy linebackers. You may ask why I then have him ranked at #48. There are a couple of reasons. Number one, he plays on a defense that is stockpiled with great fantasy linebackers, you have ROLB James Harrison who has had 34.5 sacks over the last three seasons and still finished as the #26 ranked linebacker in my scoring system during an off-year, you have LOLB LaMarr Woodley who had 11.5 sacks over his last 8 games to finish as the 17th highest-scoring linebacker, and you have LILB James Farrior who has been one of the most consistent tackling linebackers in the league over the nine years. Number two, Timmons currently plays in a position, RILB that limits his big-play upside since he doesn’t see the same amount of sack opportunities as the outside backers. And as long as Farrior is still there (and they have Larry Foote to back him up), he won’t be the main tackle guy there either. Therefore, I can’t justify predicting a large increase in his production. Yes, Timmons is uber-talented and definitely has the capability to put up top 15 numbers. However, he’s not in a position to do that currently. Also, the Steelers just drafted Jason Worilds to as another rush linebacker, so I don’t see Timmons moving to the outside anytime soon.
Does he deserve to be ranked a little higher than 48? Maybe. However, I can’t see myself drafting him at the #24 spot ahead of guys like Stewart Bradley and his teammate LaMarr Woodley. To me, this is a case of great talent, OK situation=decent production. I think IDP owners want to believe this kid is going to put up huge numbers. However, when looked at objectively, I just don’t see it happening.
