2010 Outlook: Hawthorne came out of nowhere last season to light the fantasy world on fire. He finished as the 6th ranked linebacker last year in my scoring system even after missing four games! He had 93 solo tackles, 23 assists, 3 INTs, and 3 sacks.
But this is 2010, not 2009 and as I expected Hawthorne is being overdrafted. Hawthorne is a talented, but not spectacular player and a substantial portion of his production was due to a lack of competition for tackles since strong side linebacker Aaron Curry struggled to learn the system throughout the season and Lofa Tatupu was out for the year with an injury.
This season sees the return of Lofa Tatupu to the middle of the defense. He is the unquestioned leader on that side of the field and I expect him to lead the team in tackles and steal a significant amount of tackles away from Hawthorne in the process. Hawthorne will likely start on the weak side over Leroy Hill and still presents as a solid LB3 with upside. However, I can’t justify taking him at his current ADP when I can select players such as Clint Session and Stewart Bradley with that pick.
If Hawthorne slides to you, don’t hesitate to grab him. Just don’t get cute and try to reach for him.
2010 Projected Stats: 81 solo tackles, 21 assists, 3 sacks
