Welcome to my very first article for IDPGuru.com.  Here I’m going to talk about 5 guys I’d like to have on my roster and 5 guys I don’t want any part of . Remember these are for Dynasty purposes and the key to Dynasty IDP success is to be ahead of the curve. You have to talk yourself down off the ledge those weeks our guys aren’t All-World Successes. You can’t always have that 9 tackle, 2 assist, 3 SACK, and an INT game. Occasionally you’re going to have that 3-0-0 stat line and you have to swallow it. If you building a Dynasty team for success you have to remember one thing. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

5 Guys to Get Your Hands On for 2011 and Beyond
Von Miller – People were a little shocked when John Elway took Miller ahead of Marcel Dareus in the 2011 Draft. It looks like they knew what they were doing. 3.0 sacks in the pre-season says this defense has a young nucleus of playmakers in Miller, Dumervil, and fellow rookie FS Rahim Moore. He has to be the odds on favorite for DROY. Think Brian Cushing with less ‘Roid Rage and back acne.

Cliff Avril – Remember what Ray Edwards did in Minnesota with the Williams Wall and Jared Allen? Think of Detroit as the younger, hungrier version. Suh, Fairley, Avril, and the not-so-young Kyle Vanden Bosch form one of the most aggressive defensive lines in the league. With mandatory double teams to Suh, and extra attention to KVB, Avril should be free to use his freakish athletic ability to easily hit double digit sacks.

Daryl Washington – As 2-down LB as a rookie, Washington was eased into the NFL. But this 2nd year LB from TCU is ready to EXPLODE. DC Ray Horton wants to use him as Pittsburgh uses Lawrence Timmons. While those are large shoes to fill, draft him as a LB3 and enjoy LB1 numbers by the end of the season. It will help that Arizona will be playing with the lead more this year and able to be more aggressive.

Jason Pierre-Paul – Before we continue, go YouTube “Jason Pierre-Paul, back flips”.  Damn right, WOW!!! This dude is more Freak than Jevon Kearse ever thought about being.  And with the already mentioned Kiwanuka move to SLB, this guy gets into the rotation (starting lineup with the Osi injury). For years NYG has had the strongest rotation of DL in Fantasy. Easily able to support 3-4 IDP defensive linemen, nothing will change this year. Tuck, JPP, and Umenyiora will all be key DL assets. Now, back to that YouTube clip.

D’Qwell Jackson – Still only 27 years old, Jackson is coming off of back-to-back season-ending pectoral injuries (although to different muscles).  Now he’s back in the middle of a 4-3 defense where he’ll be asked to lay the wood on anything in the middle of Cleveland’s D.  With Ahtyba Rubin and Rookie Phil Taylor eating up blockers, it’s not hard to believe (health permitting) DQ being among the league leaders in tackles again.

5 Guys to “Sell” for 2011 and Beyond

James Harrison – Coming off of double back surgeries in the off-season, beat writers are claiming he looks sluggish and not too many 33 year old edge rushers suddenly get their wheels back. Not to mention Jason Worilds is just waiting for a chance.  Thanks for the memories, highlight reel hits, and fines pal!!!

Mario Williams – Great player in a poor scheme. This guy was a Top 5 DL1 in IDP Leagues. Having 8.5 sacks last year in 13 games and having 9+ sacks the 3 years before that, he now changes positions to OLB. While this might pay off a year or two from now, he has never played the position and looks LOST in pre-season. Barring a position change back to the DL in a 4-3, there are better options out there.

DeAndre Levy – Given plenty of talent and opportunity in a young and up and coming defense like Detroit, Levy could have been the next great IDP LB. But as the full time starter last year (missed 6 games due to injury) he offered very little big play potential. 72 tackles, 0 sacks, 2 INTs. Now Stephen Tulloch has been handpicked by Coach Schwartz to roam the middle, pushing Levy to the WLB.

Mathias Kiwanuka – All I can say is, “Can we pick a spot and stick to it?”. Especially in Dynasty Leagues where annual position changes really hurt a roster. Kiwanuka will likely be over drafted due to past success. The dude was on a flat out terror (4 sacks in 3 games) before going down with a neck injury. Unfortunately, he was a DE. Now back as a SLB his sack opportunities will take a hard hit and unless your league allows you to play him at DL let someone else grab him and target his replacement, Jason Pierre-Paul.

Nnamdi Asomugha/ Darrelle Revis – People hear “Shutdown Corner” and “Best CB in the NFL” and they think they’ll be excellent Fantasy IDP options. That couldn’t be further from the truth. These 2 guys COMBINED had ZERO Interceptions last year. ZERO!!! Nobody throws at these guys. They get the Deion treatment. The guy on the other side of the “Shutdown Corner” is where the action is. They might get to Honolulu, but they aren’t getting you into late December.
