2013 IDP Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 10
Hello and welcome back to the IDPGuru.com’s most popular in-season article, IDP Waiver Wire Pickups, which will be releasing every Tuesday of the regular season.
Let’s start things off by going through some IDP news, notes, and commentary from Week 9 of the NFL season.
Fantasy owners took a huge blow last week as the Bengals placed DT Geno Atkins on injured reserve with a torn ACL, ending his season.
In a similar move, the Patriots placed DT Tommy Kelly on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Saints placed ILB Jonathan Vilma (knee) on season-ending injured reserve.
After an abyssal start, Cameron Wake finally got back on track with a 3 sack performance that included a game winning safety in overtime.
I had high hopes for D.J. Swearinger last week, but he failed to do much of anything fantasy wise. This was mainly due to the coaching staff using him in coverage versus as the run-stuffing, in-the-box safety that many expected him to be.
Brad Jones finally returned to action on Monday Night Football against the Bears. However, he didn’t play every down and there’s a chance Jamari Lattimore could continue to steal snaps away moving forward. That said, I would error on the side of caution and bench Jones until we see what happens this week.
Vincent Rey filled in well for the injured Rey Maualuga and posted 5 solo tackles while playing every down. He’s probably not a player to pick up outside of super deep leagues at this point, but he’s someone to keep an eye on.
Now onto The Guru’s IDP waiver wire selections for Week 10!
(Please note that a majority of these pickups are long-term, rest of season pickups as opposed to matchup-type recommendations. As the season progresses and the waiver wire becomes more thin and matchup information becomes more reliable, the focus of this article will shift more towards recommendations based on weekly matchup.)
Defensive Linemen
(Previously recommended DLs: Nick Fairley, Dontari Poe, Jason Hunter, Desmond Bryant, Michael Bennett, Jason Hatcher. RDT Jurrell Casey (TEN) – Casey is quietly on pace for a 40/20/12 season which are very strong numbers for an interior lineman. He gets a juicy matchup against the Jaguars this week and should be started in most leagues.
RDE Fletcher Cox (PHI – Cox has failed to meet expectations so far this year, but if you watch the game film, it becomes apparent this youngster is on the verge of breaking out. He’s been putting consistent pressure on the quarterback and should have a good opportunity to nab a sack against 32 year old journeyman quarterback Seneca Wallace this week. Good upside DL3 play.
LDT Gerald McCoy (TB) – Rounding out my trifecta of DL recommendations this week is Gerald McCoy. Although he’s been less than inspiring this season, he has a wonderful matchup against the Dolphins who lead the league in sacks allowed (nearly 4 1/2 per game). You could do worse for a stop-gap DL3-.
Linebackers
(Previously recommended LBs: Zach Brown, Akeem Dent, Erin Henderson, Jasper Brinkley, Alec Ogletree, Phillip Wheeler, Pat Angerer, Geno Hayes, Danny Trevathan, DeAndre Levy, Daryl Smith, Reggie Walker, Daryl Washington, Spencer Paysinger, Ahmad Brooks, Rey Maualuga, A.J. Hawk, Brandon Spikes, Jon Beason, Von Miller, Jon Bostic, Brandon Spikes, Jamari Lattimore, LaMarr Woodley, Malcolm Smith, James Anderson, Craig Robertson, Dont’a Hightower, David Hawthorne)
SLB Paul Worrilow (ATL) – It was Worrilow and Joplo Bartu in all of the Falcons’ subpackages last week. Worrilow, a undrafted rookie out of Delaware, dominated the defensive stat lines with 19 total tackles (he had some help from the generous Panthers’ scorekeepers). He will probably continue to play every down as long as Sean Weatherspoon is out, but remains somewhat of a risk/high variance pick as he’s not overly talented and can be schemed against, if needed. He is a boom/bust LB3 for the time being.
MLB Colin McCarthy (TEN) – McCarthy’s on the field play over the last two games has been much better than what we saw in the preseason. He’s posted 6-2 and 8-1 lines, respectively while filling in for the injured Moise Fokou. Whether his improved play has impressed coaches enough for them to give him his starting job back is still a question. However, if Fokou is OUT again this week, McCarthy is worth a look as a LB4+ or desperation LB3 play in 12 team leagues.
ILB Pat Angerer (IND) – Pat Angerer was back to playing every down last week and it showed in the box scores as he posted 12 total tackles (7 solos). The matchup isn’t great this week against the Rams, but they have been heating up their running game as of late and now is the time to get Angerer on your roster. He should be a solid LB3 the rest of the way as long as he holds his three down role.
ROLB Aldon Smith (SF) – Reports are that Smith will be activated for this week’s game against the Panthers. He will likely come off the bench and play in critical passing situations. He will probably rejoin the starting lineup next week. That said, your best bet is to pick him up this week in most leagues as he won’t be available come Week 11 in all likelihood.
Defensive Backs

S Will Hill (NYG) – Since returning from suspension, Hill has put up 25 solo tackles in 4 games and he received 100% of the snaps over Ryan Mundy in Week 8. There’s a chance Mundy could come back this week and steal snaps away, but with the Giants struggling and Hill having been productive so far this season, he’s worth the risk as a DB3-DB3+ pickup.
SS Aaron Williams (BUF) – The ship probably has sailed on Williams in most leagues, but there’s a chance he may have been dropped earlier in the year when Da’Norris Searcy was outshining him. The first several weeks of the season saw a very unclear secondary situation for the Bills. However, now fully healthy, the dust seems to have settled on the situation; Williams looks to be locked into the starting strong safety role and has seen a nice increase in tackle production as a result. Searcy on the other hand has been relegated to a hybrid S/LB role and has seen a substantial dip in his numbers. Time to jump on the Williams bandwagon and off the Searcy train.
LCB Terrell Thomas (NYG) – Along with Thomas Davis, Thomas is one of the few NFL players to tear his ACL three times. It’s been a tough road back for the 6th year veteran out of Southern Cal, but he finally looks to be healthy and is coming off a 10-1-1 FF performance in Week 8 and is now an every down cornerback with Aaron Ross going down for the year with an injury. Thomas has always been a strong fantasy cornerback and should continue to be a viable options for fantasy owners. DB3-/CB2+ moving forward.
