2010 Outlook: On the surface, it appears that Tuck had a fairly disappointing season in 2009 by only registering 7.5 sacks. However, he still finished as the 8th ranked DL in my scoring system largely because of his above-average tackle numbers. Tuck is one of my favorite fantasy IDPs because he puts up both consistent tackle and sack numbers. This allows him to consistently ran in the top 10 for defensive linemen.
I expect Tuck to bounce back this season with double digit sack numbers and 60 or so total tackles. He had nagging injuries throughout the majority of last season which really hindered his overall sack production and the Giants defensive line drastically underperformed. The Giants have a new defensive coordinator in town (Perry Fewell) and he’s going to run a variation of defensive line packages similar to three years ago when Steve Spagnuolo ran his “Four Aces” package where he brought Mathias Kiwanuka up from linebacker (where he was playing in 2007) and joined him with Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora on an all-end line that provided a frightening pass rush.
The addition of Jason Pierre-Paul to an already heavily-talented line should further increase the one-on-one matchups Tuck should see. In addition, Tuck plays LDE and therefore goes up primarily against the opposing team’s right tackle who is usually not as good of a pass-blocker as the left tackle that the RDE often times faces.
Tuck’s current ADP is DL3. I have him ranked at DL2 behind the consensus #1 DL Jared Allen. Even though his ADP is DL3, most rankings that I have seen have Tuck in the DL4-DL7 range. I would slightly disagree with these rankings and would draft Tuck as the next fantasy linemen behind JAllen (even though it would be heard to argue if someone selected Trent Cole as the DL2).
